Other auction sites

Although lots of people are earning from ebay but for small time auctioneers the fees could be too much especially if the listing doesn’t get sold.

Well, I have found other auction sites that are rather more friendly than ebay especially for small time auctioneers.

Gumtree: Gumtree is like a one-stop site for everything from rooms to jobs to dating. It’s more of an online community where people can either buy, sell or swap things.

Swoopo.com: If you sign up they give you a £10 welcome bonus and biddings go up by a penny to 7 pence. Timer runs between 10-20 minutes and if you cannot be online to bid you can set up your accunt to bid for you. You can also bid by phone which cost 50p per call and the items are delivered and as I understand they are not sent by post. So you pay for the delivery.

There are some more like lowestbideurope.co.uk, ebid.net, and uk.madbid.com

And there’s also a localized online shop called cheapcycle which is a yahoo group and listing is absolutely free and since it’s a localized groupings it’s easy to contact the seller.

Visipics.info: Deletes duplicate photos

Have you got some photos saved in your computer? Sometimes they can be duplicated and if there are fifty of them then it’s a waste of memory. But we could be unaware of this. Well, www.visipics.info is the right tool for you.

Visipics is a free program that will search your computer for duplicate images and it supports all formats. So if you have an image that is saved as JPEG and bitmap, Visipics will show them both and will let you choose which ones to delete. Also if there are edited photos, Visipics will detect them and will also allow you to autoselect to save the one with a higher resolution.

Internet is running out of IP address

What is this? According to my favourite internet magazine, Webuser, IP address will have been exhausted by 2010.

IP address stands for Internet Protocol. Each computer, website, and internet network server is assigned an IP address for identification.  We are very much aware that thousands of new websites crop up daily. You may say only a few people make websites. But networking sites such as facebook, myspace, friendster, hi5 and the likes allow you to create your own webpage or profile page which gets an IP address of its own.

The current IP version, IPv4 (Internet Provider version 4) can only generate 4 billion combinations. Currently the world’s population is 6.7 billion. Even if there is only a fraction of it surfing the net, the problem is that many IP address once used goes to the “recycle bin” and accordingly, this is what spammers spoof to send malicious emails. In addition, using internet on the mobile phone is growing exponentially.

But we don’t have to worry. Authorities are now putting their expertise on the matter which started in February this year. The new version will be called IPv6 and according to a reliable source it will generate 340 trillion trillion trillion combinations.

Will our computer automatically change its configuration?

It depends on what operating system one uses. Luckily for Window’s Vista users their OS is already capable of handling the switch to IPv6. But with XP users will have to do it manually.

Here’s how from Webuser Issue 187, p43  From your Local Area Connection click on Properties. Click Install then in the Select network Component Type dialogue box, click Protocol, and then Add.  In the Select Network protocol dialogue box, click Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 and then OK.

Split Tab: view multiple windows simultaneously

Do you like multitasking like me? Do you find annoying sometimes to switch between windows or tabs. Or do you open 2 or more internet windows and resize them smaller so you can view two windows at the same time? Or do you just open tabs and switch between them?
With two open windows is just like dividing a room in two from floor to ceiling and installing separate lights for each when you can leave a space in the ceiling where you can put a long fluorescent bulb to illuminate both rooms. Did you get what I mean?

With split tab you can view multiple internet windows simultaneously. You don’t have to switch between windows hiding the others while viewing the one in front. This is because the main browser is split between tabs. You can choose to tile your tabs vertically, horizontally, or both ways.

I find split tabbing very useful especially with my PTC sites. When I’m viewing paid ads I can open up to 4 windows and it makes navigation so much easier as all the windows are visible and I can see which one is already finished.

So, if you want to use Split Tab just click on the image below.

Linky: Open multiple links simultaneously

As I  mentioned in my previous post, linky is a firefox add-on that lets you open multiple links in a new tab simultaneously. This is going to be useful especially if you are doing searches and you want to view several pages one after the other.

It was created by a person nicknamed Gemal and I give him all the credit for his ingenuity.

Where do I use linky?

I heard about linky from a social networking blog. It was supposed to help me rake multiple page views in with just a few clicks. But I’ve discovered more ways to benefit from linky.

When I’m searching for images on Google or an item on eBay it usually returns more than 10 pages. I open all ten pages simultaneously rather than opening them one by one which means clicking the mouse several times.

If you haven’t downloaded linky yet, you better do it now and see what difference it makes.

Get linky here.

linky.JPG

Here’s how to use linky

After you have downloaded linky it will appear when you right-click on your mouse. I am assuming that you are using right-hand mouse, otherwise do the opposite.

Here’s a detailed instruction how to use linky

linky1.JPG

You see the highlighted page numbers? Right-click within the selected numbers and point your mouse to Linky then click on Open Selected Links in tabs. It will take you to another dialog box like this

linky2.JPG

ClickOpen-selected-links button and all those pages will open in new tabs. It saves you time and energy.

Your keyboard

keyboard.jpg

With the coming of the mouse, the keyboard has lost its other uses aside from typing and entering data. But did you know that before the mouse came to exist all commands are done using the keyboard?

Similarly, I have noticed that many people use the backspace, space bar, and the arrows all the time.

Here are some techniques simple techniques I want to share with you today.

If a word is highlighted you can overtype it.  You don’t need to press delete or backspace to clear it. Just type the word you want to replace it.

insert.JPG  The Insert Key

If you press this key you can type over a word or a character without deleting it. Or if you type are typing in the middle of a sentence and it is replacing the characters that you have already type it’s because this key is on. Make sure this is off if you don’t want to use it.

home.JPG The Home and  End Keys end.JPG

PressHome and your cursur will go to the beginning of a line on the left. Press End and your cursor will go to the end of the line on the right.

The arrow keys

arrows.JPG

Press Ctrl and the right arrow and your cursor will skip from one word to the next on the right. Similarly, if you press Ctrl and left arrow your cursor will jump from one word to the next going to the left.

Ctrl and up arrow your cursor will go up one line. Press Ctrl and down arrow your cursor will go down one line.

If you press ctrl_home.JPGyour cursor will go to the top of the document. If you are in a website it will take you to the home page.

If you press ctrl_end.JPG your cursor will go the end of a document.

If you press ctrl_delete.JPG you will delete the one word to the right.

If you press ctrl_backspace.JPG it will delete a word to the left.

Instead of scrolling the bar up and down use these key combinations

ctrl-pgup.JPG It will take you one page up.

ctrl-pgdn.JPG It will take you one page down.

Entering web addresses quickly

Don’t you get annoyed sometimes to type www dot blahblahblah dot com? I have a recent discovery that I want to share with you. I’m sure computer and internet savants are already familiar with this thing but I also know that a lot of people out there don’t know it yet and it will benefit a lot of us.

I’m going to tell you about Ctrl + Enter and Shift + Enter keys and how they can be of help to us.

The Ctrl + Enter

 ctrl_enter.JPG

Normally, when people type a web address they have to start with www. and the rest of it.  But did you know you can just type the main website name and press Ctrl and Enter keys to go to the domain you want to visit?

Example, when I login to may gmail account I just type gmail on the address bar and press Ctrl and Enter keys and it will automatically go to www.gmail.com. I use less effort and it saves me time. This will be a big help especially for people who type slow and have to look at the keyboard and the screen to check if they are typing the right thing.

Please take note that  Ctrl/Enter is only for .com domains. Since most websites have got this domain this tip is going to be very useful.

The Shift + Enter

shift_enter.JPG

These two keys are for the .net domains. Well, not very many domains end with it but still we could use it.

My next favorite site to visit is www.inquirer.net and so I find this shortcut key useful.

I do hope you find this information useful as I do.
